The people of Okija in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State are in a frenzy, following the killing of three suspected gunmen by members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday in the community.
The Nation gathered the gunmen, numbering about 15, stormed the camp of the vigilante members, thinking they were sleeping.
One of AVG members who spoke with The Nation in confidence said the gunmen came with AK-47 riffles and different charms.
The charms, according to the source, were hung on their necks, waists, hands and legs.
“When they came, they opened fire on us without knowing they stepped into the lion’s den.
“Let them continue coming we are ready for them, nonsense people,” he said.
Anambra Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu could not be reached as his phone was switched off.
But the report was confirmed by one of the Senior police officers in the State, who pleaded anonymity
The officer said the Command was working in tandem with the vigilance groups and other sister agencies to make Anambra the safest State in the country.
One of the residents who identified herself simply as Patience said the hoodlums had been terrorising Okija for a while, forcing them to constitute a security committee .
“That decision has started paying dividends. Our people are determined to succeed on this project,” she said.
