The African Peace Institute for Social Research (APIS), is seeking the United Nations collaboration on Peace Building in Africa through the Office of the UN Special Adviser on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect.
The Director General of APIS, Prof Danladi Abok Atu through a Virtual meeting with the Associate Political Affairs Officer of the UN Office on Genocide Prevention, Juliette Lehner, gave some insights on the aims and objectives of APIS and shared thoughts with the UN Special Adviser on what the Institute aims to achieve with the collaboration of the United Nations on Peace Building in Africa.
The meeting which is the first of its kind between APIS and the UN Office on Genocide Prevention had in attendance the top management Staff of APIS and other partners of the Institute who all joined virtually.
Speaking for the APIS Team, the Director General of the institute, Prof Danaldi Atu said the African Peace Institute for Social Research, is an organization that cut across all the countries of Africa, to put heads together to fight the various conflicts ravaging the African Continent with a coordinated approach in the peacebuilding process. To achieve these goals the Director General said it is important for the Institute to collaborate with other agencies which is why APIS is seeking to collaborate with the United Nations being a development partner in the Peace Building Process. Â
Prof Atu said research in Africa is faced with the problem of inaccurate Statistical Data, which is why APIS is engaged in Empirical Research concerning conflicts in Africa as a way forward to guide policymakers and political leaders to taking decisions based on facts. He further said APIS is seeking collaboration with the UN Desk on Africa to provide them with first-hand data and thoughts on Peace Building in Africa and other areas of need.
On her part, Juliette Lehner the Associate Political Affairs Officer, UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, said as the focal person on Africa, her role mostly is to monitor and analyze situations at risk of atrocity crimes as well as atrocity prevention capacities and strategies. She said she looks forward to more engagements with the Institute which would grow into a bond of collaboration between the two organizations.
