Members-Elect of the 7th Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) have been urged to prioritise competence above any other consideration in the choice of Speaker and other principal officers.
A group, Concerned APC Youth made the appeal in a statement issued by its Convener, Salihu Abdullahi Osuko (Garkuwa Giza) on Saturday in Lafia.
This is coming barely few hours after the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) accused Governor Abdullahi Sule of plotting to use security operatives to impose principal officers on the Legislative Arm of Government in the State.
According to Osuko, competency and not incumbency should determine the choice of Speaker and other principal officers of the Legislative Arm.
He warned against the consensus arrangement being practiced since inception of democracy in 1999, noting that every member deserves to vote and be voted for irrespective of party affiliation.
He also cautioned Governor Sule against interference, adding that the exercise should be free, fair and credible.
“We advice the Honourable Members to vote by their conscience and not by religious, tribal or any political sentiment for the interest of the state.
“We advice the Honourable Members to please not sell their votes nor compromise on their standard by voting on fake promises,” the statement reads.
The statement added that Nasarawa State need the best leaders at all strata of governance that will govern without any fear or favour.
“We need a challenging, vibrant and active Assembly that will give the best for the state and its people.
“We call for decorum among members and a peaceful exercise.”
The All Progressives Congress (APC) had retained its majority status with 11 seats, PDP 08, SDP 03 and NNPP 2, making the 24-man Assembly.
