An Abuja based legal luminary, social activist, community development advocate, the leading candidate and SDP flag bearer for the 2023 Ondo State House of Assembly Election in ILaje Constituency 1 , Barrister Fadeshola Ojamomi today reiterated the need for Ilaje and Ijaw to live in peace and harmony.While speaking with OndoMind in Igbokoda, he passionately opined in a press conference;
“My attention has been drawn to the unfortunate news of the alleged disappearance of an Ijaw brother who was said to have briefly branched Awoyè area of Ilaje Local Government while on a journey. It has been confirmed that the body of the said man has not been seen or identified but he has been reported dead.”
“The shocking incident which happened on the 1st of October 2022 has plunged our constituency into endless pandemonium as children and women have started deserting their ancestral homes over the news of an intending invasion of Ilaje Communities.”
“I sympathize with our Ijaw brothers and advise that they make the matter official by reporting to the Police and follow same up to a logical conclusion.”
Anyone found culpable should be dealt with in accordance with the law. I heartily encourage our Ijaw brothers not to put the laws into their hands. We are close neighbors as well as brothers and we cannot afford another communal conflict at this material time.”
I therefore call on the Governor of Ondo State to as a matter of urgency send a delegation to Awoye and its environs to further give assurance to our people and guarantee their safety whilst ensuring investigations to be carried out and concluded with perpetrators brought to book.”
“I have in the last 48 hours received calls from our people in Awoye and it’s sad that Ilaje people are running and leaving their communities in droves out of fear of being attacked.
The mass exodus of people in the troubled communities will further affect the economy of Ilaje as well as create untold hardship on the people who are already running away from where they get their daily bread. The Security operatives are therefore advised to allay the fears of the people by giving them assurances.”
The biggest problem in the world today could have been solved when it was small but leaders who ought to put an end to it watch it escalate. I call on Political and Traditional Leaders within Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government to quickly find a lasting solution to this bottleneck.
Lastly, development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, the Aketi led Government has tried everything possible to ensure the state remains peaceful. I therefore appeal to all parties affected by this unfortunate issue to give peace a chance because there is no alternative to peaceful coexistence”, he concluded.
