Champions League: “To be honest, we didn’t deserve it” — Carvajal
Football is a tricky thing that often times deals in ironies if the Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid has proven anything. Very often times, it isn’t the best team that comes out on top or the favorite team that puts up the best performance on the pitch.
Bundesliga side, Borussia Dortmund learnt that the hard way as they went into the game as underdogs but came out as the side with lots of things to rue following the 2-0 defeat.
According to Real Madrid star, Dani Carvajal, the La Liga side had no business coming out of the game as European Champions for the 15th time if the level of performance on the pitch equaled the full time result.
Despite securing a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on Saturday night, the Real Madrid defender admitted that his team’s performance didn’t merit even a draw against the Bundesliga side.
Carvajal, who opened the scoring for Los Blancos in the 74th minute, was candid about the overall display of his team. In a post-match interview, the Spain international acknowledged Dortmund’s dominance, particularly in the first half.
“We didn’t even deserve a draw, but this is football,” Carvajal stated via MadridXtra on X, reflecting on how the match unfolded.
Borussia Dortmund came out strong, creating numerous scoring opportunities and pressing Real Madrid’s defense. The German side was particularly dangerous in the first half, with Niclas Füllkrug hitting the post in what was one of several close attempts.
However, it was Real Madrid who broke the deadlock through Carvajal’s well-placed shot, followed by a late goal from Vinicius Jr., sealing the victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
While the score line favored the Spanish giants, Carvajal’s comments highlighted the fortuitous nature of the win and acknowledged Dortmund’s commendable efforts on the pitch.
This of course, has become a recurring theme for Real Madrid in UEFA Champions League finals; allowing the opponents play the ball while they win the trophy.
