Representatives’ caucuses meet to deliberate on Tinubu’s tax reforms, gaining increased support among lawmakers. Explore the latest developments.
The party caucuses of the House of Representatives are scheduled to convene on Saturday to discuss the four tax reform bills submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in September 2024.
Concurrently, state caucuses will gather on Monday to address the same issues in preparation for the legislative chamber’s resumption of plenary on Tuesday.
Mr. Philip Agbese, the Deputy spokesman for the House, shared this information in an exclusive interview with OBASANJONEWS in Abuja.
It is important to note that on September 3, 2024, the President presented these four tax reform bills for consideration, following the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms led by Taiwo Oyedele.
The proposed legislation includes the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, aimed at establishing a comprehensive fiscal framework for taxation, and the Tax Administration Bill, which seeks to clarify the legal framework for taxation and minimize disputes.
Additionally, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill intends to repeal the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and create the Nigeria Revenue Service, while the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill aims to establish a tax tribunal and ombudsman.
However, these bills have faced significant opposition from the 36 state governors, who have called for their withdrawal to facilitate further consultation.
On Thursday, November 28, the House held an executive session lasting over two hours, but the bills were not addressed during the plenary session that day, as they were not included in the Order Paper.
Agbese emphasized that the upcoming meetings of the party and state caucuses will provide lawmakers from various political backgrounds and states with essential insights into the proposed reforms before the plenary session on Tuesday.
