Mubarak Bala, former president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, has expressed fears for his safety following his release after serving four years in prison for blasphemy.
Arrested in April 2020 in Kaduna and taken to Kano, he was accused of incitement and breaching public peace, leading to a 24-year sentence in 2022 after pleading guilty. An appellate court later reduced his sentence, citing its excessive nature.
Bala explained he pleaded guilty to protect himself and others connected to his case, as they were also targets. His case has drawn international attention, raising concerns about his safety and the state of freedom of expression in Nigeria.
