A secondary school teacher at Government Day, Kulende, Ilorin, today beat and tore the vest of a Corps member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to shreds for allegedly failing to accord the teacher the respect she deserved.
According to reports, the Corps member had visited Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin for her clearance letter when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses said the teacher, Mrs Amuzat Fatima Nike, attacked her for not greeting her and her colleagues properly, tearing her NYSC crest vest and allegedly slapping her. The incident has since sparked public outrage.
Meanwhile, the Kwara state government has condemned the alleged assault on the female Corps member. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Saβadatu Modibbo Kawu on Friday described the conduct of the affected teacher as unacceptable. She disclosed that the Ministryβs Anti-Loitering Team, alongside the Management Team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, had conducted an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the incident and restore calm. She said necessary disciplinary actions would be taken against the school teacher.
The head of Information and Public Relations of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the State, Morakinyo Oladipo, who confirmed the incident, said that the Scheme would seek redress on the attack against the corps member. He added that in the interim, the corps member would be reposted out of that vicinity, βat least to calm her down to help her overcome the trauma.
