North Korea has vowed to support Russia until its triumph in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to the country’s foreign minister, Choe Son Hui, during her visit to Moscow. This statement comes amid U.S. warnings that North Korea may send thousands of troops to assist Russia in the war.
Choe emphasized North Korea’s unwavering commitment to its Russian allies, stating, “We will always stand firmly by our Russian comrades until victory day,” following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. There are concerns that up to 10,000 North Korean troops are training in Russia, potentially preparing to enter the conflict.
Choe praised President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, labeling Russia’s military actions in Ukraine as a “sacred struggle.” She also reaffirmed North Korea’s intent to enhance its nuclear capabilities, which has raised suspicions that Pyongyang seeks nuclear technology from Russia in exchange for military support.
While neither country has officially confirmed troop deployments, Lavrov acknowledged the “very close ties” between their military and intelligence services, highlighting their shared security interests.
In light of the strained relations between Russia and the West since the invasion of Ukraine, North Korea and Iran have emerged as key allies for Moscow. Lavrov expressed gratitude for North Korea’s “principled stance” regarding Ukraine, further solidifying the relationship between the two heavily sanctioned nations.
The situation remains tense, with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cautioning that while North Korean troops have not yet engaged in combat, their involvement could occur soon. In response to North Korea’s missile tests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the lack of action from allies and urged for the removal of restrictions on military aid to Ukraine.
