At least 24 people have died and five others sustained injuries following a bus crash on a highway in Zacatecas, a central state in Mexico. The tragic accident occurred early Saturday morning when the bus collided with the back of a tractor-trailer that was transporting corn.
Zacatecas Governor David Monreal took to social media to confirm the fatalities and assured that support would be extended to the victims and their families.
Rescue operations were underway Saturday morning to recover bodies that had fallen into a ravine, as reported by a local government official who requested anonymity.
Images circulating on social media depicted rescue teams and security personnel, including military forces, securing the area while efforts to retrieve the bodies continued.
The bus was en route to Ciudad Juarez, a border city in Chihuahua, but it has yet to be confirmed if any migrants were among those affected by the crash.
