Following a recent deadly attack by terrorists along the Gusau-Funtua highway, the Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed that investigations are underway while asserting that normalcy has been restored in the affected areas. The incident, which caused widespread panic among road users, has drawn attention to the persistent insecurity plaguing the region.
ASP Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, spoke with Peoplesmind on Thursday, emphasizing that calm has returned to the highway due to the deployment of multiple security agencies to the scene. He confirmed that terrorists had set up a roadblock around the Tazame axis of the Gusau-Funtua road, but he could not verify the number of travelers abducted during the ambush.
Reports suggest that heavily armed assailants intercepted commuters, abducting an unspecified number of individuals and creating widespread panic as they forced passengers to an unknown destination. The attackers were reportedly strategic in their approach, also blocking alternative routes such as the Magazu-Kucheri Road, further isolating the Gusau to Funtua corridor.
Abubakar stated, โOur officers are already there. It is raining now, and any moment from now, I am expecting them to return and give us feedback on what actually happened because right now, I do not have the details of what is happening, but we have calmed the situation. Normalcy has also been restored to the highway and daily activities have continued.โ
Meanwhile, there is still uncertainty surrounding another reported ambush in which terrorists allegedly killed five police officers and three soldiers who were escorting workers from a construction company in the Tsafe Local Government Area. The attackers’ targeted strike has raised concerns over the safety of both civilians and security personnel in the region.
Commenting on the ambush, Abubakar said, โWe are still investigating the incident. The police will issue a report soon.โ
As authorities work to piece together the details, the Zamfara State Police Command remains on high alert, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the attacks and any potential connections between them.
