Ruth Ogunleye, a former private in the Nigerian Army, recently spoke to AIT News to clarify the story surrounding her exit from the military. She shared that, despite rumors claiming she was discharged by the army, her departure was voluntary. According to her, the Minister of Women Affairs asked her to leave the army, and she followed this advice by writing a letter of resignation. In the letter, she explained that she no longer had an interest in being a soldier.
Ogunleye’s statement also addressed a previous case where she accused some senior officers of sexually harassing her. After an investigation, the army claimed the accusations were false, and Ruth was let go due to concerns about her mental health. However, Ruth says this version of the story is not true. She believes it was a setup, suggesting that certain people tried to cover up the truth, especially for a senior officer named Colonel Abdulkarem.
“I saw my news flying up and down that the army Discharged me, The Army never discharged me, it was the minister of women’s affairs who requested me to leave the army, which I wrote a handwritten letter, voluntary discharge, I wrote a letter that I have lost interest, so there was nothing like discharge anywhere, it was just a frame-up, they ganged up against me trying to cover up for Colonel Abdulkarim”. Ruth said.
