Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day is marked by a somber mood as the country reaches 30 months of war against Russia’s aggression. Instead of fireworks, parades, or concerts, the day is observed with solemn commemorations for the civilians and soldiers who have lost their lives in the conflict.
Ukrainians have turned to social media, expressing gratitude and support for the soldiers on the front lines, while acknowledging the toll the prolonged conflict has taken on the nation.
In his address to the nation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reflected on the sacrifices made for independence, stating that the war initiated by Russia has now spread to its own territory.
Speaking from Sumy, near the Russian border, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, describing it as a response to Russia’s advances in eastern Ukraine.
Despite Ukraine’s efforts to push the conflict into Russian territory, the war continues to affect eastern Ukraine, with evacuations underway in the strategic city of Pokrovsk as Russian forces draw closer. The day also saw a brief visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who offered to help mediate peace, raising hopes for a potential path to resolution.
