At a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, former President Donald Trump suggested he might support measures to revoke access to mifepristone, a drug used in medication abortions. When asked if he would direct the Food and Drug Administration to take such action, Trump indicated that there are various humane options to consider. “You could do things that ā¦ would supplement ā absolutely ā those things are pretty open and humane,” he said. Trump’s comments signal a shift from his earlier stance in June, when he stated during a CNN debate, “I will not block it.”
Trump’s remarks also come in the context of Project 2025, a conservative policy plan advocating for such a ban, although Trump and his campaign have distanced themselves from the initiative. During the press conference, Trump did not disclose how he would vote on Florida’s upcoming ballot initiative to expand abortion access, instead hinting at a future announcement. Harris-Walz campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez criticized Trumpās comments, arguing that his stance could exacerbate the challenges faced by women seeking abortion care.
The abortion pill mifepristone has been a focal point of political debate since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, with ongoing legal battles over its access.
