The Biden administration announced a $400 million initiative to pay farmers in the Western U.S. for water conservation efforts.
The Department of Agriculture aims to conserve about 50,000 acre-feet of water across 250,000 acres of irrigated land through partnerships with at least 18 irrigation districts.
This funding will help farmers in drought-stricken states like California, Arizona, and Nevada manage water resources more efficiently while continuing crop production. Each district will receive up to $15 million to distribute to farmers who voluntarily reduce water use.
The plan addresses the severe drought conditions impacting 35 states and supports agricultural producers facing challenges from prolonged water shortages.
