The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike on Thursday impounded and crushed 500 commercial motorcycles in Abuja. The operation was carried out by the Joint Task Force of the FCTA on the orders of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The motorcycles were seized from strategic locations used by okada operators as operational routes, such as Kpaduma II, Asokoro Extension, Galadimawa near Primary School, Gudu market, Kabusa junction, and Apo mechanic.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Garba Haruna, said that the action was proof that the okada ban was still in effect. He warned that any okada operator found operating in the FCT would be arrested and prosecuted.
The ban on commercial motorcycles in the FCT was first imposed in 2006. However, the ban has been repeatedly flouted, leading to accidents and security concerns.
The FCTA’s latest action is seen as a renewed effort to enforce the ban and improve safety in the FCT.
