The army chief of Sudan urged international pressure to be applied to the paramilitary forces he is fighting, including their label as “terrorists,” and warned the United Nations that months of war in his nation might spread throughout the region.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of the army, urged the international community on Thursday to label the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization and to target its sponsors outside of Sudan’s borders, alluding to ties with Wagner mercenaries in Russia.
It is now abundantly clear that regional and international interference is being used to support these groups. This indicates that the region will experience its first spark, which will directly affect both domestic and global peace and security, he continued.
Burhan urged the world’s nations to refer to the RSF as “terrorists” at the UN.
They have engaged in numerous crimes that support such a designation, he claimed.
“All such crimes require accountability and punishment, including those who have supported murder, burning, rape, forced displacement, looting, theft, torture, the trafficking of weapons and drugs, and the recruitment of children.”
RSF leader Hemedti stated in a video message that was made public on Thursday, just before Burhan addressed the UN, that his forces were ready to end the conflict through resumption of hostilities and thorough political negotiations.
Hemedti declared, “Today, we reaffirm our commitment to the peaceful process to end this war.”
