A letter from the Diaspora By King Wale AdeSanya
Introduction:
National parks play a crucial role in preserving natural environments, promoting eco-tourism, and fostering community engagement.Â
FCT’s new Minister Wike’s mission to restore the integrity of the parks in Abuja should be supported by all Nigerians. In fact, all our local governments should create Community Parks for people in their areas.
Today in Ankara, we were hosted at a Picnic by a family whoÂ
lived in an apartment complex. The park was within the city center and was full of families.Â
This serves as an excellent example of a country where national parks are utilized as a community social responsibility. From promoting education and awareness to boosting local economies, Turkiye showcases how national parks can benefit society as a whole. Nigeria, with its diverse natural resources and rich biodiversity, can learn valuable lessons from Turkiye’s successful approach to national parks.
1. Education and Awareness:
One of the primary ways national parks contribute to community social responsibility is through education and awareness programs. In Turkiye, national parks provide opportunities for educational activities, such as guided tours, nature camps, and workshops. By engaging local communities, schools, and youth organizations, these initiatives enhance environmental knowledge and promote a sense of responsibility towards nature. Nigeria can emulate this approach by creating educational programs within its national parks to educate its citizens about the importance of conservation and sustainable practices.
2. Preservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage:
National parks in Turkiye serve as a means to preserve both natural and cultural heritage. They protect diverse ecosystems, rare species, and archaeological sites. This preservation not only enhances biodiversity but also encourages cultural appreciation and historical understanding. Learning from Turkiye, Nigeria can integrate cultural heritage preservation within its national parks, showcasing indigenous cultures, traditional practices, and historical sites to enrich both tourism and local communities.
3. Economic Opportunities and Sustainable Development:
Turkiye recognizes the economic potential and social benefits derived from national parks. By promoting eco-tourism initiatives, the country generates income for local communities. This income supports the development of infrastructure, such as lodging, restaurants, and transportation services, thereby creating employment opportunities and improving the living standards of nearby residents. Nigeria, with its diverse landscapes and wildlife, can channel funds generated through its national parks towards sustainable development projects, job creation, and poverty alleviation.
4. Community Engagement and Participation:
Community engagement and participation are vital elements of national park management in Turkiye. Local communities are involved in decision-making processes, including park management, planning, and monitoring. By ensuring community participation, Turkiye fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents. Nigeria can adopt similar practices, involving local communities in the governance of its national parks. Collaborative efforts will not only enhance conservation measures but also empower communities to protect their natural heritage.
5. Environmental Protection and Sustainability:
In Turkiye, national parks actively promote environment-friendly practices such as waste management, promoting sustainable tourism, and reducing carbon footprints. These efforts contribute to climate change mitigation while preserving and restoring ecosystems. Nigeria can follow suit by implementing sustainable practices within its national parks, including waste management systems, renewable energy solutions, and nature-based solutions to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
Conclusion:
Turkiye serves as an excellent example of how national parks can be utilized as a community social responsibility. By prioritizing education, preservation, economic opportunities, community engagement, and sustainability, Turkiye maximizes the benefits of their national parks for both nature and society. Nigeria can learn from Turkiye s approach and apply similar strategies to harness the potential of its national parks, positively impacting local communities and promoting environmental stewardship for future generations. Taking a cue from Turkey’s success, Nigeria can chart a sustainable and responsible path towards preserving its natural heritage.
