The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned $26,000 to a British woman who was duped by an internet fraudster posing as an American entertainer.
Christine Brown, 70, was presented with the money by the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Command on Monday. She had earlier petitioned the commission after being defrauded of her life savings.
Brown said she met the fraudster online and they began a romantic relationship. The fraudster then began to demand money from her, which she sent through wire transfers, Bitcoin, and gift cards.
Kanu Idagu, the zonal commander of the EFCC, said the commission will continue to work to ensure that victims of fraud are restituted. He also warned the public to be careful about who they interact with online.
