The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected former Kano Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the new National Chairman of the party
Here are ten things to know about the new APC Chairman:
1. Ganduje was born in 1949 to a Fulani family in the village of Ganduje, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State
2. Ganduje attended Kano’s Advanced Teachers’ College from 1969 to 1972. He subsequently went on to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1975. He earned a Master’s degree in applied educational psychology from Bayero University Kano in 1979. Ganduje later returned to Ahmadu Bello University for a Master of Public Administration degree from 1984 to 1985. In 1993, he earned his PhD in public administration from the University of Ibadan.
3. During the Second Nigerian Republic, Ganduje joined the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and served as Kano Assistant Secretary from 1979 to 1980.
4. He contested the House of Representatives election in 1979 under the NPN but lost. Between 1984 and 1994, he held various government positions in the Federal Capital Development Authority.
5. In 1994 he became the Kano Commissioner of Ministry of Works, Housing, and Transport.
6. In 1998, he joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and ran for Governor in primaries overseen by Tony Momoh, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, and Senator Bala Tafidan Yauri, among others; he was defeated by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
7. He served as the Deputy to Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso between 1999 and 2003.
8. Between 2003 and 2007 he served as the Special Adviser to the Minister of Defence.
9. He succeeded Kwankwaso as Governor in May 2015 and later won reelection in 2019 for a second term in office.
10. Following the resignation of former Nasarawa governor Abdullahi Adamu as National chairman, the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress named Ganduje as National Chairman of the ruling party on August 3, 2023.
